MPD identifies man killed during shooting that left 3 DC police officers injured

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has released new details after three police officers were injured and a man was killed during a shooting Monday morning.
In an update on Tuesday, D.C. police identified the man as 45-year-old Derrick Williams of Northeast.
According to MPD, the incident began just after 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 13, when officers were called to the i5 Union Market apartment building in the 300 block of Florida Avenue for a man armed with a gun.

Once on the scene, police officers made contact with Williams who ran into the elevator. Several officers were called to the apartment building to help locate him.
Police said moments later, Williams returned to the lobby where he encountered D.C. officers and a struggle began.
That's when he began shooting at officers, according to MPD. D.C. police officers returned fire, hitting Williams. He died at the scene.

MPD said three police officers were injured during the incident and were taken to the hospital. Since the shooting, two officers have been released, however, the third officer remained hospitalized, as of Tuesday, Jan. 14.
As the investigation continued, authorities obtained a gun from the scene.

Per the MPD's policy, all three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave.
On Monday, DC News Now obtained a letter from the management team at i5 Union Market that confirmed Williams lived in the apartment building.
Neighbors told DC News Now that they are frustrated by crime in the area and some are considering moving.
The case remains under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division. The shooting is also under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team.
MPD said the United States Attorney's Office will complete an independent review of the facts and evidence in this case.
