There is a critical need for blood donations in North Texas after the winter storm forced Carter Bloodcare donation centers to close for two days. According to a spokesperson, as of Monday, there was less than a one-day supply, which could have the potential to impact 200 medical facilities and hospitals in North, Central, and East Texas. The low supply could lead to some hospitals being forced to make decisions about who will get help. Carter BloodCare was forced to temporarily close North Texas donor centers and cancel blood drives last Thursday and Friday due to hazardous travel conditions during the winter storm. Now that weather conditions have improved, Carter BloodCare is welcoming and rewarding those who choose to donate. CarterBloodcare said all blood types are needed, but A positive, A negative, B negative, O positive, and O negative, are on the critical need list. Platelets, which are vital to control bleeding, are in demand as well, Carter BloodCare said. According to Carter BloodCare, each whole blood or double red O negative donor will receive a $50 e-gift card. Platelet donors also receive a $50 e-gift card. All Carter BloodCare donors will receive a $20 e-gift card through Jan. 17, and a hooded long-sleeved shirt is available while supplies last for donors in January and February, Carter BloodCare said. You can learn more about the supply and how to donate here.
