SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A serial rapist accused of assaulting at least six women at gunpoint was sentenced to prison on Tuesday.

Ali Ghaffar of West Springfield pleaded guilty to 30 charges in December. Prosecutors say Ghaffar would pick up women in the south end of Springfield, and drive them to Bear Hole Reservoir in West Springfield, where he would threaten them with a gun and rape them, leaving the victims in the woods.
He was arrested in 2022 after two survivors helped police identify him as their assailant. DNA samples were also taken from Ghaffar which matched a sample from the March survivor.
Tuesday's sentencing was at Hampden Superior Court in Springfield where five victims shared their impactful and emotional statements to the judge. Many refer to him as a "monster" for what he did, detailing how their lives have never been the same.
The prosecution and victims shared how Ghaffar offered to help them at first, by giving them a ride, and then when they noticed they were going in the wrong direction, Ghaffar flipped a switch and became demanding.
The victims shared how they were raped at gunpoint, some of the victims at a middle school and others at Bear Hole Reservoir then abandoned. They shared how they were mothers and grandmothers who thought they would never see their children and grandchildren again.
The prosecution was seeking a sentence of 36 to 40 years for what he did.
"I would suggest the maximum sentence is needed to ensure that women can walk safely in the area of Springfield and West Springfield, all over Hampden County without having to deal with someone who did this scientifically, picking his victims with care, adapting to police presence at one of his scenes," said Assistant District Attorney Max Bennett.
Ghaffar pleaded guilty in December to 30 charges, his defense attorney hoping to get a lesser sentence through his guilty plea, stating in his final statement that he was accepting responsibility and had no prior criminal record.
The judge sentenced Ghaffar to 22 years total in a state prison with five additional years of probation, after he is released, he will have a GPS tracker which will restrict him from being in the area of the victims, also having no contact with the victims. He will also have to register as a sex offender.
