ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – What could become of the Expo New Mexico State Fairgrounds? Near the end of 2024, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a 'Request for Proposal,' or RFP, seeking ideas for a master plan to redevelop 236 acres of state-owned land in the central part of Albuquerque. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders podcast, Chris and Gabby discuss what this could mean for the area near the International District with freshman District 6 City Counselor, Nichole Rogers. Rogers shares her thoughts on the proposal, and how she's handling feedback from constituents. The governor's announcement is coupled with half a million dollars in state funding and ideas for potential housing development, entertainment venues, and possibly moving the State Fair out of Expo. What do the neighbors want? And what are the next steps?  "When we talk about things like the state fair and 236 acres in the middle of my district, I definitely want to be a part of that conversation," Rogers said. Rogers expresses a need for mixed-income housing in her district, pointing out that the majority of her constituents are renters. "We've gotta tip that scale the other way and that's how I'm gonna help people get out of poverty," said Councilor Rogers. "As a single mom, that's what changed my housing stability, was owning my own home," Rogers added. "If not, the rug can be pulled from under you, the rent can be raised like we're seeing, there's no tenant rights. Like, you're at the mercy of other people - all the time."
