NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Bitterly cold air for all with some patchy areas of freezing fog are the big weather stories this morning. Air temperatures for nearly all are below freezing with light winds making it feel a little bit colder, but eventually, temperatures will slowly rise ahead with drier air in the short term. Leftover low-level moisture from yesterday's weakening storm has been steering a few light snow showers into the East Highlands with the west-southwesterly upper level winds, but what is more prevalent are the below-normal morning temperatures, especially in northwestern areas with high humidity, especially in the high-elevation mountains valleys to parts of the East Plains of New Mexico. Air temperatures have been as low as a few degrees below zero from the San Luis Valley through San Juan Mountains to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, as well as parts of the West Highlands, but mostly in the upper single digits, teens, and 20s elsewhere. Snow flurries will remain in the far-Northern Mountains will some drizzle in Southeast New Mexico overnight, but otherwise skies will mostly clear out from clouds with most of the lingering low-level clouds east of the Central Mountains dissipating by the afternoon with lower humidity. From the morning school commute throughout the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the 20s, 30s, 40s, and lower 50s from north-northeast to south-southwest from high to low elevation. An eventual warming trend with drier westerly winds will return in earnest later this week before our next wintry pattern this weekend.
