Jefferson Parish celebrates bicentennial with kickoff to carnival

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish is turning 200 years old and the bicentennial birthday celebrations are set to start with a kick-off to Carnival season.
To mark the beginning of Mardi Gras, on Tuesday, Feb, 11 performers such as The Jay Walkers Second Line band will hold a special presentation recognizing 2025's carnival captains, kings, queens, and grand marshals.

“We are excited about kicking off our 2025 Carnival Season on our Bicentennial birthday, and we are encouraging the entire community to join us as we recognize our rich 200-year history and celebrate all Jefferson Parish has to offer,” said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng.
A total of 12 parades will roll in Jefferson Parish including:
Metairie
Krewe of Little Rascals — Saturday, Feb. 16. 12 p.m.
Family Gras & Krewe of Excaliber — Friday, Feb 21. 7 p.m.
Magical Krewe of Mad Hatters — Saturday, Feb. 22. 5 p.m.
Krewe of Atlas — Sunday, Feb. 23. 4 p.m.
West Bank
Krewe of Music — Monday, Feb. 24. 6 p.m.
Krewe of Nandi — Wednesday, Feb. 26. 6 p.m.
Krewe of Symphony — Thursday, Feb. 27. 6:30 p.m.
Krewe of Athena — Sunday, March 2. 5:30 p.m.
Krewe of Centurions — Monday, March 3. 6 p.m.
Krewe of Argus — Tuesday, March 4. Starting at 11 a.m. with Krewe of Elks Jeffersonians to follow.
“Just as Mardi Gras celebrates the spirit of unity and revelry, the Bicentennial reminds us to honor our history, marking both the joy of the present and the legacy of the past. Together, they create a vibrant tapestry of culture, tradition, and the unbreakable bond of our Jefferson Parish community," said Sheng.

The celebration will happen at Lakeside Shopping Center at 3301 Veterans Memorial Boulevard from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Sheng adds that the bicentennial year will include a variety of community events, local initiatives and new projects that instill a sense of pride for Jefferson Parish.
