WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called in after a 19-year-old was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy.
The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Alec Edward Shaw. The fatal shooting took place on Jan. 9
According to the press release, deputies saw Shaw carrying a rifle and gave verbal commands to drop the weapon. Shaw refused to comply with the deputies and started firing at law enforcement. He then fled behind a building on NC 33 West.
Beaufort County Sheriff's deputies and North Carolina State Highway Patrol formed a perimeter and continued to give verbal commands to Shaw, ordering him to drop his weapon. Shaw fired again from behind the building forcing a Beaufort County deputy to return fire — fatally wounding Shaw in the process.
EMS was staged nearby and arrived moments after law enforcement secured the scene. Shaw was transported to a local hospital where he later died after life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
NCSBI is still investigating and the deputy is on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.
