RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Wake County man is recovering from injuries and working to rebuild his landscaping business after he tried to stop someone from driving off with his trailer.
Ronald Whilden's trailer was parked in his driveway in southeastern Wake County when he said someone stole it shortly before 5 a.m. Monday.
"I wasn't just gonna stand there and let him take everything I've worked for, so, I saw him turning around and I ran towards him," Whilden said.
Whilden said he tried to hop onto the back of the truck to stop it but slid under the trailer, the driver kept going -- dragging Whilden.
Whilden was left with road rash up and down his body. He had to go to the hospital.
"It could definitely be a lot worse though, so I will say I'm fortunate in that I could have been mangled, or worse killed," Whilden said.
Whilden said he usually leaves the trailer hooked to his truck.
"But since it broke down over the holidays, I had to unhook my truck, it's been in the driveway -- and they just got me," Whilden said.
Between the trailer, the mowers on it, and other landscaping supplies he said he's now out more than $10,000.
"I cashed out all my savings, I bought a 6.5 x 14-foot long double axel landscaping trailer," Whilden said.
Not only has he lost much of how he makes a living, but he and his wife say they've lost a sense of security in their own home.
"For someone to come to your house at five in the morning and then just take your entire business away, I mean it's really disheartening," Whilden said.
Because it was so dark out, Whilden said he could not figure out the make and model of the truck. The Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
There's a GoFundMe effort set up to help Whilden rebuild his business, Supreme Green LLC.
