BENSON, N.C. (WNCN) — Investigators are working to piece together how a 57-year-old man was killed before he was discovered dead in the backseat of a vehicle in Johnston County on Sunday.
It was approximately 1:06 a.m. Sunday when two separate reports were made to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina State Highway Patrol about a person and vehicle seen in the 2500 block of Holly Grove Road.

One caller reported a suspicious person to the sheriff's office, who they said was a man walking around outside of a shelter in all-black clothing. A second, who called a trooper, reported a vehicle in the same area with its four-way flashers on. Initially, it was expected the vehicle may have been involved in a wreck, the sheriff's office said in a release.
The trooper arrived at the scene first and found a 57-year-old man dead in the backseat with an apparent gunshot wound. That victim has since been identified as Emmanuel Kwame Gbedee of Durham.
A crime scene was established and the sheriff's office continues to actively investigate this as a homicide. As of 11:30 a.m. Monday, no suspect has been identified in Gbedee's death.
