EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 19-year-old man is facing a charge of murder after allegedly stabbing and killing his stepfather this past Sunday morning, Jan. 12 in West El Paso, according to court documents obtained by KTSM. Police: Man arrested, charged with murder in West Side stabbing Court documents say Raymundo Morales, 19, is facing the charge after killing his stepfather Angel Martin Herrera, 40. Court documents say police were dispatched just before 3:30 a.m. that Sunday to a home located along the 5800 block of Beaumont Place in reference to a verbal argument. Officers then left the scene after ensuring that no one was hurt and that only a verbal dispute had taken place. However, officers returned to the home at about 4 a.m., this time in reference to a call about a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located Herrera who was lying unresponsive within the home with a stab wound to his neck. A knife was found nearby, according to court documents. He was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Court documents say that Morales' mother told the initial responding officer that she had stabbed Herrera. However, witnesses who met with detectives said that Morales was the one who stabbed Herrera. Morales' mother then recanted her initial statement and admitted that it was her son who stabbed Herrera, according to court documents. Detectives later learned that there was a family gathering involving alcohol that night where Morales, Morales' mother, Herrera, and two other witnesses were present. Court documents say that during the gathering, Morales became angry with one of the witnesses and assaulted her by striking her in the face and pulling her face towards his chest. The witness who was allegedly assaulted told police that she had been choked by Morales, according to court documents. This led to Herrera confronting Morales verbally. Morales then brandished a knife in his right hand and stabbed Herrera on the left side of his neck, according to court documents. Morales was placed into custody, read his Miranda rights and voluntarily told police a different version of what happened that night, saying that he became angry with his stepfather for pushing his mother, and that he used a kitchen knife to stab Herrera in the neck. Morales also told police that his mother tried to take the blame for him, but Morales did not let her. Morales also stated to police that he "killed his stepdad," according to court documents. Witnesses, however, told police that they did not see Herrera, the victim, assault anyone that night, according to court documents. Morales was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a $650,000 bond.
