Teen charged with having a machine gun following a chase and crash in Chester

CHESTER, SC – A 16-year-old faces weapons charges following a chase and crash involving a school bus in Chester, South Carolina.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) says a Lieutenant tried to pull over a car on December 13, 2024 on Pine Street for a weapon violation.
SLED says the driver took off, so the Lieutenant and deputies from the Chester County Sheriff’s Office chased the car until it crashed into a school bus near the
intersection of Saluda Street and JA Cochran Bypass.
There were two adults and one child on the bus at the time. Paramedics took the child to the hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the car, 19-year-old Matthew Cunningham, is charged with failure to stop for blue lights, child endangerment, and simple possession of marijuana.
A 16-year-old passenger in the car is charged with unlawful possession of a machine gun and unlawful possession of a handgun by a person under 18-years-old.
