ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Tickets for the Bills vs. Ravens divisional playoff game are going for hundreds of dollars. Fans may be clicking around online, trying to find the best seat for cheap. "Fans are excited and tickets will probably be in high demand, However, sometimes people get caught up in that excitement and try to get hands on tickets and that's when they're more likely to encounter a scam." said Katarina Schmieder, the communications director of the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York. "Scammers know that people are looking forward to the game so they're ready to take advantage of that." Both the BBB and the Erie County Sheriff's Office warns fans if you find a deal online that seems too good to be true, it most likely is. "Even in the 300 levels, tickets for Sunday's game are starting right around $200, if the deal is too good to be true, typically it is," said Lt. Jeremy Lehning from the Erie County Sheriff's Office. "If you are on Facebook or any social media platform, watch out for things like 'hey I'm sick I have to get rid of my tickets', or 'I just had a death in the family' and the ticket prices are astronomically low." The BBB warns it's not a good idea to try to purchase tickets from anyone you don't know personally and be aware of red flags like profiles with small friends lists and recently made profiles who are posting these deals. The Sheriff's office says these scammers are difficult to track. "A lot of these scams, if they do pop up on social media, are not even happening within the United States, they're happening from over seas," said Lt. Lehning. BBB also warns fans to be aware of copycat websites. They said four out of five scams that are reported to them happen online. They recommend always using a credit card for online purchases and double check to make sure a website's URL has "https:" and a lock symbol. The Erie County Sheriff's Office says to make sure to buy from verified partners and ticket sources, and to read the terms of conditions to understand what you are buying and the refund policies. If you do get scammed, they encourage you to notify your local police department. You can report a scam using the Better Business Bureau scam tracker here.
