State of the State: Budget deficit, homelessness among high priority issues facing McKee
Jan 14, 2025
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee will address residents on how the state is looking for 2025.
The governor will give the State of the State Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
It will be Governor McKee’s fourth address since he took office in March of 2021.
The address comes following a report from the state’s office of management and budget saying Rhode Island needs to close a $400 million deficit in order to balance the budget this fiscal year.
The report also estimates the deficit will grow to nearly $700 million in the next six years, if state leaders don’t change their spending habits.
The address also comes as Governor McKee faces pressure from the Providence city council to declare homelessness a state of emergency, something the governor says he will not do.
