Brace yourselves for a frigid morning across central Indiana, as temperatures have dropped to the single digits, with wind chills that have fallen below zero in many locations. Highs will only climb into the low 20s by the afternoon, with wind chills peaking in the single digits. Tuesday snow showers On top of the cold, an Alberta clipper is racing across the region, bringing light snow throughout the day. Although the snow won't have a significant impact on the Indianapolis metro area during the morning commute, conditions will worsen as the day progresses. The snow is expected to reach northwestern Indiana around 7 a.m. and into the downtown Indianapolis area by 10 a.m. This quick-moving system will pass through by late afternoon, with skies clearing to give way to some sunshine as the snow exits. Though the snowfall won’t be heavy, it will still affect travel through midday and early afternoon. The snow will be light and powdery, so blowing and drifting are possible. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will be slick, and gusty winds at 20 to 30 mph may reduce visibility. Snow accumulation will be light, with northern areas of central Indiana seeing up to 1.5 inches, while areas closer to Indianapolis and further south will likely get anything from flurries to a dusting of snow. Temperatures plunge Once the clipper clears, the bitter cold will settle in. By Wednesday morning, temperatures could plunge to around zero, and wind chills will make it feel like -15° during the morning commute. Make sure to bundle up with plenty of layers, including hats and gloves, and try to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid the extreme cold. Looking ahead Looking ahead, temperatures will briefly warm to above freezing levels by the end of the week before a stronger push of arctic air travels south. Temperatures early next week will dive back below zero.
