Be prepared for a brisk start! Temperatures have dropped to the single digits across central Indiana with wind chills currently below zero in several communities. Highs should only rise to the lower 20s early in the afternoon. The weather will not only be bitter, but our team is tracking a quick-moving Alberta clipper that will affect the area today. At 5 a.m., the wave of steady, light snowfall was traveling over northern Illinois, and it’s moving in a southeasterly direction. The morning rush hour near the Indy metro should not be impacted by the light snow. Futurecast has the leading edge of the snow arriving in our northwestern counties around 8 a.m. and closer to downtown Indianapolis by 10 a.m. It will quickly push across the area through midday with most of the activity moving out late in the afternoon. Once the system exits, the area may even see peeks of sunshine. Snow totals are going to be light with this fast-moving system. The highest amounts will likely occur over north central Indiana, which has a chance to receive 0.5” to 1.5”. Lighter totals are more favorable closer to Indianapolis and points south of the city. This storm system may not produce much snowfall, but it will affect travel through midday and early in the afternoon. Clippers typically produce a light, fluffy type of snow, which makes blowing and drifting a real possibility. Slick conditions are expected on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses. Reduced visibilities are also anticipated as winds pick up and produce gusts between 20 and 30 mph. Behind the system, arctic air is going to channel into the region and temperatures will sharply drop. Lows will tank early Wednesday morning and are expected to fall near zero! A light breeze will still create dangerous wind chills values down to -15° for Wednesday morning’s rush hour. It’s important to prepare for the bitter conditions by wearing an appropriate number of layers, including hats and gloves. You will also want to try limiting your time outside in the elements if possible.
