INDIANAPOLIS -- While work-from-home jobs have become common in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are some job offers you should avoid. This is one of them, according to the watchdogs at Scamicide. Many scams rely on laundering money or merchandise in an effort to separate the crooks from the crime. This work-from-home job scam aims to rope you in as the middle man. According to Scamicide, the scam happens when somebody contacts you about a work from home position where your job is to receive goods, such as electronics, that are shipped to you.  You are in charge of inspecting the merchandise and shipping it off to an address provided for you. While that may sound like an easy gig, it's actually a way to turn you into an unwitting accomplice. The goods you received were bought by a hacker who used stolen credit cards to purchase them. You have just become an accomplice by shipping them to somebody else who will turn around and sell them for cash. Another way it works: the scammer will simply send you money for you to deposit into your own bank account and wire it to somebody who is supposedly a client. However, it's actually stolen money that is just going back to the scammer after becoming traceable to you. While there are other variations on this racket, Scamicide recommends staying away from job offers that involve re-shipping goods from home. And you should never use your own bank account number to transfer money for an employer.
