Deputies exchange gunfire after allegedly witnessing suspect fatally shoot woman at North Carolina home

HARRISBURG, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- There was an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and Cabarrus County deputies in Harrisburg Monday evening, the sheriff's office told Queen City News.
According to the Cabarrus County sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a call to a home at Hammermill Drive near Roberta Road regarding a reported dispute.
Deputies say, two deputies witnessed a male subject fatally shoot a female in the driveway of the residence. The suspect then fired multiple rounds at the responding deputies, "displaying reckless disregard for the safety of nearby homes and residents in the neighborhood," according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies returned fire while requesting additional support from the Concord Police Department.
The incident concluded with both the female victim and the male suspect pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the suspect and victim are being withheld pending family notifications.
During the incident, the sheriff’s office made an automated call to area residents that they should stay in their homes.
None of the deputies are injured at this time. They have been placed on administrative leave.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to investigate. This incident remains active.
