BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) - As the migrant crisis intensifies in Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey is calling for a closer look--and potential overhaul--of the right-to-shelter law. The right-to-shelter law passed over 40 years ago, and was written to guarantee housing for families with children and pregnant women, but has been altered over the last year as increasing numbers of migrants have come to the state seeking housing assistance. Massachusetts leaders react to changes you may see soon after Trump inauguration At a press conference on Friday, the governor told reports the law's current function does not align with its original intention. "It was written to protect and take care of poor women and children. It didn't imagine a broken immigration system and waves and waves of people," Healey said. This is coming after the arrest of a shelter resident in Revere who allegedly possessed 1 million dollars of fentanyl and a loaded AR-15. The arrest raised questions about the safety of these shelters and prompted the Healey administration to conduct an inspection of all emergency housing sites. Governor Healey said she ordered background checks on all shelter residents this spring but recently learned that this order was not fully followed. "That's absolutely unacceptable. I've ordered CORI checks to be done on all shelter residents across all sites," Healey said. Additionally, a former Boston Police Commissioner will lead an independent review of the shelter system, and the governor says his findings will be made available to the public. The first batch of bills for this session are due later this week.
