PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence firefighter accused of punching two police officers at a Johnston bar is no longer with the department, Target 12 has learned. Patrick Brearley, 42, is facing charges of simple assault, obstructing an officer in execution of duty, and disorderly conduct. The charges stem from an incident at The Ave Bar and Grille in Johnston on Jan. 4. Josh Estrella, a spokesperson for Mayor Brett Smiley, released a statement to Target 12 on Monday confirming Brearley was no longer a Providence firefighter. “While the city does not comment on personnel matters, Smiley expects Providence firefighters to uphold the highest standards of integrity," Estrella said. "As of Friday, Patrick Brearley is no longer a Providence Firefighter.” Estrella would not confirm if Brearley was terminated or chose to resign. Target 12 reached out to the Providence Firefighters IAFF Local 799 for comment but did not immediately hear back. Body-worn camera obtained by 12 News shows Brearley's interaction with Johnston police officers was tense. Officers said he looked "extremely intoxicated and disoriented," when they responded to the bar. “We don't want to have to escort you out in front of everybody. Just walk out,” one officer said. Brearley refused to comply, which prompted officers to bring him to the ground. The video showed Brearley's fists were visibly clenched. “Watch your fist, man. We’re trying to help you,” an officer can be heard saying. The footage showed Brearley continuing to resist and ignoring commands to leave or sit against the wall. As police tried to escort him outside, he pulled back, clenched his fist and punched an officer in front of him. Brearley pleaded not guilty in court last Friday. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and is due back in court on Jan. 31.
