BITTER LAKE, S.D. (KELO) -- As fishing enthusiasts continue the ice fishing season, officials in Day County are encouraging you to proceed with caution after two vehicles fell into the ice at Bitter Lake over the weekend. One vehicle fell in the water early Saturday morning, and the other vehicle cracked through the ice early Sunday morning. Man struck by falling tower light pole identified "Both vehicles were within 100 yards of each other," Chief Deputy Josh Hoven of the Day County Sheriff's Office said. Both drivers were unharmed. Hoven says in both cases, the vehicles were on the ice while it was dark. The driver on Sunday was also dealing with blowing snow. "It's better to go during the daylight when you can see everything you got and then your weak spots in the ice, slush pockets, ice heaves, which I think is mostly related to both of these incidences," Hoven said. Shane Guy helped find each vehicle. He says that if you find yourself in a similar situation, you should stay calm and take the proper precautions. "When you're on the ice, you should always use caution, have a window down because you never know. I mean, accidents happen," Guy said. "When driving in a vehicle, I always have at least a window down on my side or anybody who has it. It's going to be a cold ride, but better to be safe than sorry because I don't have a window breaker, so I don't want to get trapped in there," Kalista Graham said. Graham says she prefers the ice to be at least 14 inches thick before she drives a truck on it. If she's unsure, she'll go to her four-wheeler. "It's much safer. It's much lighter, and you can move around on the ice more easy," Graham said. All to make sure you can catch the next big fish safely. As of Monday afternoon, the vehicle that fell in Saturday is still in the ice, but officials were able to remove the vehicle that fell through on Sunday.
