10 On Your Side Success: Elderly women have new HVAC system
Jan 13, 2025
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — It's a 10 On Your Side success story.
Two women — 84-year-old Gloria Simms and her 99-year-old aunt, Emma Hansford — have lived for the past year without heat in their home, and after 10 On Your Side's original story aired last week, folks in the area stepped up to replace the unit for free.
And now, 84-year-old Gloria Simms and her 99-year-old Aunt Emma Hansford will be sleeping comfortably.
10 On Your Side Success: Chesapeake women to have heat again
Simms inherited this home from her parents on one condition: “Keep it as a family home for family and friends to come, to visit and to stay," she said. "And since my parents have been deceased, that has happened."It was certainly true this past week as people came into the home as strangers, but left as family. Jon Shaffer of Shaffer Heating and Cooling couldn't be happier for these two."Actually get heat today," Shaffer said Monday. "When they come home and go to sleep tonight, it'll be a much different experience for them."And besides one little hiccup with the unit that goes in the attic …
"We just had to take it apart to fit through the access and then reassemble it up in the attic,” Shaffer said.Everything has been smooth sailing, and it's really been the coming together of a community to make this happen."The help from Marlon the electrician from 2 C.o.o.l. Enterprises — he came out and donated his time and the material to run the circuit to make this happen,” Shaffer added.Social services also came by to make sure Simms wasn't getting scammed — and noticed another need."They came in and realized she didn't have smoke detectors in the house," said Simms' pastor Edwin Goodwin. "So the fire department came in and installed three of those here."And a woman knocked on their door to hand them $100 to use on bills. It's been a week that has seen Simms and Hansford showered with a little sawdust, and lots of love.
"I'm just thankful — very thankful for everybody that is here today," Simms said. "I just feel so blessed. I truly do."
The heat was turned on around 3 p.m. Monday. Goodwin said 28 other companies also reached out to offer their services. He said he’s grateful to everyone for showing their love and support in this issue.
“I just pray I can hit 70 and be as jovial and as happy as those two ladies are," Goodwin said. "So she's benefited so very much from just one phone call to WAVY-TV 10."
