NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – One Norfolk mother is on a quest for accountability after a fight last week at Lake Taylor High School in which a 15-year-old student was found with a knife. NPS: Lockdown at Lake Taylor HS day after knife found on student On Wednesday, Jan. 8, police responded to a fight at the school, and the student that was attacked was able to walk away with non life-threatening injuries, but his mother wants more to be done so this doesn't happen to any other student. Sheretha Jones said she was heartbroken as she watched a video of her son, Jermond Robinson, getting jumped. "Seeing that video hurt me to my heart because, at that instance, you're watching your child be beat on by multiple people — no staff no security around," Jones said. "Anything could've happened. They could've hit him the wrong way and he could be gone." Jermond said a knife was pulled during the fight, and Norfolk Police said a knife was recovered from a student. They also arrested a 15-year-old girl, who is a student at Lake Taylor. Norfolk Public Schools said the student with the knife was not involved in the fight, but Jermond, still shaken up, said he recalls seeing the weapon and that it was about the size of this kitchen knife. "Something has to be done, that's the first thing I'm going to say because no one can tell me how they got the knife in school," Jones said. "Nobody can tell me how she got the knife in the school. If you have metal detectors reassure that they work." Along with more safety measures, Jones said communication between the school and parents needs to be better. "I don't know what the world is coming to now, I really don't, because no child should be able to get a knife in school," Jones said. "This is my son's last year, so now I got to uproot him out of school and switch him to another school because I don't feel he is safe." She said she fears other parents feel the same. Jones said she plans to press charges on all of the individuals involved.
