Award-winning classical musicians to make their Maui debut
The first film, "Te Pito o Te Henua (The Navel of the World)," is a documentary that focuses on the most remote inhabited island on Earth. The film dives into the community of the indigenous Rapa Nui people as they prepare for a significant cultural celebration.
The second film, "Standing Above the Clouds," is another documentary that follows Kanaka mother-daughter activists working to protect Mauna Kea. The film follows the duo as they oppose the construction of a large telescope on the sacred mountain.
Following the first screening, the County of Maui's Office of Innovation and Sustainability will launch a pop-up cinema initiative that will bring five more films to Maui's communities. The office aims to foster dialogue and cultural exchange while highlighting films from across the Pacific.
