WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Winston-Salem State University students have returned to their residence hall after the building was without water and heat for three days during the winter storm due to a water line break. Students returned to the Martin-Schexnider Residence Hall about 24 hours ago. The water line break caused around 200 residents in the building to be displaced. “I was trying to figure out what I was going to pack ... How long am I going to be here? Like what's going to happen? Am I going to have to go home? Am I going to have to go home with somebody else,” said Ayden Jones, a WSSU student. These are all big questions that went through Jones's mind when he was told he would have to leave his room in Martin-Schexnider Residence Hall due to the water line break. He had just returned to campus after he went home to Memphis, Tennessee, over the winter break. “I got nobody here ... I was kind of scared out of my mind ... They took care of us, so it's cool,” Jones said. There was no water or heat in the building due to the water line break. It happened early Thursday morning. Contractors repaired the initial break, but then another happened soon after. “When the weather changes, things happen. And that's one of those pieces. But fortunately for us, it was an isolated piece versus a massive challenge, and I think that was the blessing in disguise for us ... We did not want our students to feel any discomfort,” WSSU Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Life Dr. Shawn Odom said. Around 200 residents in the dorm were displaced. Some returned to their homes, and WSSU relocated most of them to two different hotels in the city. “Our water was out and heat was out. It was really cold, and we had to leave our rooms and go to hotels,” said Demarria Johnson, a WSSU student. “Our main ... way of contacting our residents is through their university email. So we mass emailed all of our students in MSX Residence Hall making sure they were aware of what was happening. We also utilize our social media platforms," Assistant Director of Marketing, Communications and Strategic Priorities for WSSU Housing & Residence Life Taylor Walker said. Meals and campus security were provided to students staying at the hotels. Many students were pleased with how the university handled it. “We just enjoyed our stay at the hotels, and we came back to MSX. Everything was right on time ... They are perfectly aligned, and here we are back on campus,” said Zion Black, a WSSU student. The university said the repairs were made within 24 hours of when the issue was discovered. Students remained at the hotel until Sunday to ensure the line had properly cured before their return “The hotel experience ... was cool. I'm still having a little bit of heat problems in my room,” said Demarria Johnson, a WSSU student. WSSU still does not know the specific cause of the water line break. They said each building undergoes routine maintenance and this issue was not preventable.
