FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS) School Board met Monday night to discuss their next decade plan. NACS senior leadership team presented the plan back in June of 2024. Now, their top priorities are their career and technical education (CTE), alternative school facility and their transportation facility. The projects were described by NACS Superintendent Wayne Barker as "immediate needs". The CTE and alternative school facility would expand career opportunities for students not looking to attend college post-graduation. It would offer programs in veterinarian medicine, criminal justice, firefighter and EMT training, and more. In Monday's meeting, the NACS board of trustees presented the estimated cost and timelines for numerous projects. CTE Facility/Alternative School - $35,712,000, Construction Time: 17 months Transportation Facility/Renovation - $18,000,000, Construction Time: 13 months Natatorium Facility/Renovation - $46,092,737, Construction Time: 24 months Turf Athletic Field - $4,600,000, Construction Time: 6 months 9th Elementary School $59,340,000, Construction Time: 24 months NACS School Board will need an operating referendum in November 2025 to pursue its projects. To move forward with the CTE/alternative school facility and the transportation facility, the board must approve a request for proposals (RFP) at its next meeting on January 27. The RFP process includes finding engineers, architects, and construction management and control systems for the design process. The design process to initial groundbreaking would take about 14 months. If the RFP moves forward in time, the CTE/alternative school facility will finish in 31 months in July of 2027. This means that current eighth graders would be able to take full advantage of the program in their Junior year of high school.
