ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Partners in business and in life Jesse Brunt and Michelle Sloey started J&M Film Resins during the pandemic. "Movies took a hit as we all know," Brunt said. "No one was going out, we were on the West Coast at the time, on the beach, the sun was setting, and I was wondering about all this cool film that comes out of our hometown… What's happening to it?" The two moved to the West Coast to make a career out of cinema. Brunt has an aerial videography business, but J&M Film Resins is a joint venture. The two source the film from collectors and others across the country and the world. The film is sometimes in dire shape like a 1914 Charlie Chaplin reel, or in pristine shape like a 2014 Interstellar frame set (complete with an IMAX frame), or somewhere in between like the frames of a Kodak commercial. Brunt says they have nearly a thousand films in collection, and continue to source and preserve film they can find. J&M Film Resins also does custom work. Now open: The Beef & Butter Company in Henrietta The film frames are preserved in clear, high-grade resin. "Getting the film out of the elements as much as you can, like they do in other industries is really why we do that," Brunt said. Each resin has 24 frames of film — or one second of screen time — and if it's not a silent film, you can even see the audio. The two are moving back to Rochester, and look to have the business on both coasts, preserving memories for the people. Rochester-based audio archivist keeps sounds of all kinds safe We call it a 'participation in preservation.' There's a natural progression of (physical media) being phased out. People like to see these and hold things, they like to feel it," Brunt said. "My favorite part is when we're at the market and someone discovers our booth," Sloey said. "There's a flood of emotions that person has and they are explaining to us about their memories, and the emotions you feel at our booth are overwhelmingly good... Someone is not even getting it for themselves, (saying) 'I'm giving it to my mom who showed me this movie.'" When they start in earnest in Rochester, J&M Film Resins will sell at festivals and markets, with the plan to open their own brick-and-mortar down the line.
