Wichita may allow golf carts to drive on city streets
Jan 13, 2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The Wichita City Council will consider changing the city ordinance to let golf carts drive on some streets. The ordinance is on Tuesday morning's city council agenda.
If the ordinance passes, golf carts would only be allowed on streets with a speed limit of 30 mph or under. The vehicle would have to display a "Slow-Moving Vehicle" emblem and a registration emblem issued by the City of Wichita. The golf cart owner must show proof of required liability insurance and pay $75 a year to get the registration.
The golf carts need safety equipment that meets Kansas requirements, such as stop lamps, tail lamps, rear reflectors, a rearview mirror, and seat belts.

Golf carts would be prohibited on public highways, arterial streets, streets with speed limits of more than 30 mph, and in the city's core area. The core area is Kellogg on the south, Hydraulic to the east, Murdock Avenue on the north, and Seneca Street, Nims Avenue and Stackman Drive to the west.
Carts would also be prohibited on sidewalks or walking trails unless designated as golf cart paths. They would also not be allowed on bike paths or on-street bike lanes.
Drivers must be at least 18 years old and have a driver's license to drive on city streets and comply with all traffic laws.
Golf carts cannot be on city streets from 30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise.
The ordinance would not apply to golf carts:
Used legally for community events,
Used by government agencies, and
Not on public streets, such as on private property or golf courses.
