Up to 1" snow Tuesday morning; another artic blast is on the way
Jan 13, 2025
This has been an active winter so far. Indianapolis has had 15.7" of snow, more than 4" above average. The last two storm systems brought heavy, wet with significant accumulations, but this will be a light snow event. A clipper system will quickly sweep over the state and bring more snow on Tuesday. The leading edge of the snow showers will arrive by mid-morning and spread across the state through lunchtime. The steadiest snowfall is expected to occur in the morning, before exiting the state early in the afternoon.
Even though this system will be fast-moving, it will bring a chance for accumulating snowfall. Anywhere from a 0.5” to 1.5” of snow will be possible, with the highest totals across north central Indiana. The light, fluffy snow will likely blow and drift across roadways and could limit visibilities within the heavier bands. The snow will end in the early afternoon and skies will clear during the day. Once the system moves out, arctic air is going to channel into Indiana and temperatures will tumble. The clearing skies and snowpack will allow overnight temperatures to dip below zero in Indianapolis, with wind chills down to -15°. Wednesday will be a sunny, cold day with highs only in the teens.
The arctic chill lingers through Thursday morning, but temperatures should recover by the afternoon. Highs will rise above freezing again on Thursday and into the upper 30s on Friday as out next storm system approaches. Rain will develop late Friday and as we cool dawn Saturday, we'll have a ran/snow mix that will change to snow showers in the much colder air on Sunday.
January has been a cold month so far, as we ended a 9-day cold snap Sunday.
Our snow season is off to a fast start.
Light snow will spread across the state Tuesday morning.
Tuesday will be a cold day with up to 1" of snow.
Temperatures will stay for frigid for the next two days before a warm up arrives.
