INDIANAPOLIS -- The family of a 14-year-old girl is mourning and looking for answers after the teen was shot to death on Indy's south side over the weekend. Police are still investigating what led to the fatal shooting of the 14-year-old just a few blocks from her family's home. Tonight, that family is asking for help holding whoever committed the crime accountable. Deandra Staples loved to dance.  As part of the G3 Steppers program, she got to showcase that ability. "She was small in size, but mighty in heart," said the victim's grandmother Ramona Griffin. "She definitely was like a fire cracker," said Maranda Sanders. Sanders, Staples' G3 coach, recalls her endless energy and passion for life that was tragically cut short. IMPD: Suspicious semi-truck causes Market Street shut down in downtown Indy "She was young. She never had a chance to get a driver's license. She never had a chance to go to prom. She just started high school. She just started living," said Sanders. "They took a piece of my heart. My baby didn't deserve to be shot in the head and left in the snow," said Griffin. Police were first called to the Laurelwood Apartments along Salisbury Lane on Saturday, just after 11 a.m., and found the 14-year-old shot dead in the snow. "I can't even understand how someone can be so cruel to kill my baby and then just leave her out there," said Griffin. Griffin admits she's not sure what motivated the violence. Police also don't know for sure exactly what time the shooting took place, but it marked the first youth homicide of 2025. "As a Hoosier, my heart breaks for the city, but I am hopeful," said Erreol Morgan with the Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition. "We've got to stay vigilant, connected and unified that this won't continue because we won't tolerate it," said Morgan. "I’m hurt. I’m devastated," said Griffin. "You took somebody away from here. It was senseless and I'm so tired of the killings between kids and kids." Police did not have any detailed suspect information to release and no arrests have been made.
