Writer: Lola Jarzemsky Photographer: Duane Tinkey For more than 45 years, Lowery’s Designer Fashions has sold custom-tailored suits in a variety of bold patterns and colors. The shop at Merle Hay Mall also offers a selection of sweaters, shirts, coats, shoes and accessories. The beloved boutique has built strong connections in the community, thanks to its founder, Richard Lowery Sr., who owned and operated the business until 2023, when he was 82 and passed the leadership role to his son. Today, Richard Lowery Jr. works to ensure that the store remains a go-to destination for men’s formal wear. In 1993, founder Richard Sr. recognized a need in the local market for men’s fashion. At the time, he was one of just a few Black entrepreneurs in the fashion industry in Central Iowa, and over the years, he became an expert. He says the business is committed to quality, selling and tailoring suits made from premium materials to last a lifetime. Richard Jr., working alongside his dad, finds the job both demanding and rewarding. “It’s challenging because he set the bar so high,” the younger Lowery said. “He’s been in this business for over 40 years, and his relationships, connections and insights are unmatched. I’m just trying to maintain the name and the experience for our customers.” Both father and son understand that fashion is always evolving, so they keep tabs on current trends in colors, fabrics and patterns. This involves getting out there, keeping their eyes open and their feet on the ground to explore what’s new across the country and around the world. But even as styles come and go, Lowery’s persistent focus on personalized service and superior craftsmanship keeps customers returning time and time again. Richard Sr. and Richard Jr. share a vision for the future of the business. They plan to expand their services online and offer ways to shop online. Even so, “there’s nothing like walking into a store,” Richard Jr. said. “You can see it, touch it, feel it and try it on.”
