The Baltimore Ravens tallied a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday night, but there was another cause for celebration.Broadway actress Samantha Pollino, who grew up in Hampstead, Maryland, sang the national anthem before the football game with beauty, ease, and quintessential Baltimore flair.Indeed, our fair Ravens took it to the Steelers, who’d been showing signs of slowing down in the past month as it was. Combined with Ravens swagger, home team advantage, the simple existence of Lamar Jackson (and his mom), Justin Tucker back to form, let’s face it — the yellow and black fellas were up against a nearly insurmountable hurdle. Ravens won 28-14. Earlier this month, Ravens fans were less than pleased by hometown musician Jimmy Charles’ rendition of the national anthem before the team’s Jan. 4 game. To Charles’ credit, it appeared to just be an off night for the Maryland Music Awards 2024 Country Artist of the Year.Nonetheless, Baltimore needed a musical comeback on Saturday. Pollino stepped up to redeem the Baltimore talent pool, doing us all proud.Pollino is an emerging Broadway star who is currently performing in “The Great Gatsby.” Previously, she was part of the casts of “Hamilton” and “Sweeney Todd,” among other productions. She also attended Baltimore School for the Arts, and family, friends, and fellow alum on social media couldn’t be prouder. After an embarrassing effort from a local country singer last week, the #Ravens tapped HAMILTON veteran and Baltimore School for the Arts grad Samantha Pollino to sing the national anthem today. She did not throw away her shot.[image or embed]— Rebecca J. View on Threads View on Threads Speaking of national anthems, for those of us who did a double-take during the anthem before the Buccaneers/Commanders game, we should know there are Baltimoreans —thus, Orioles fans — everywhere. As the @Commanders get ready to take on the @Buccaneers– can’t help but hear the crowd yell “O” during the National Anthem. You still got a ton of @Orioles fans in the DMV.
