CENTRAL NEW YORK – Amid a whole lot of weather interruptions each of the area’s high school boys bowling teams managed to get in at least one match before the first full week of 2025 was done.
Back on Jan. 3 Fayetteville-Manlius hosted Cicero-North Syracuse at Green Lakes Lanes and split that match, the girls Hornets topping the Northstars 7-0.
Ashlynn Yonge led F-M with a three-game total of 506 which included games of 180 and 174. Lillan Squire was close behind with a 495 series finished off by a 187 game, while Samantha Geiss earned a 461 series two pins ahead of Zoe Hunt’s 459 set which opened with a 185.
In the boys match the Hornets fell to C-NS 7-0. Sean Bird shot 226, 203 and 183 in a 612 series, while John Antczak had a 536 series and Nate Capria a 509 series. For the Northstars, Nehemiah Bachmann had a 726 series with games of 236, 255 and 235 helped by Garrett Arnold’s 652 series and Cameron Miller’s 635 series.
Exactly one week later F-M got a sweep of Syracuse City at Green Lakes, each of them 7-0 decisions.
Antczak’s 660 series beat Bird’s 659 set by a single pin for the boys Hornets as Antczak had games of 238 and 231 and Bird got a 222 and closed with a 242. Cole Cox a 246 game during his 635 series as Henry Keeney shot a 202 and Jacob Baccaro had a top game of 192.
On the girls side, Yonge’s closing 217 helped produce a 529 series, tops among all individuals. Geiss was steady with 178, 176 and 162 in her 516 series as Squire had an opening 184 during her 472 set.
Taking a 6-2 record into the new year the East Syracuse Minoa boys team didn’t waste much time building on that mark.
At Lighthouse Lanes last Monday afternoon the Spartans put together a 7-0 shutout of Oswego with four individuals shooting series of 620 or better led by Alex Locke’s 673 set which had games of 224. 238 and 211.
Luke Liedka started with 225, followed with 206 and 205 and got a 636 series, just ahead of Kyle Nissen’s 632 series which opened with a 233. Zach Kassel shot a third-game 236 to bump up his series to 620.
Ellana Occhino returned for the Christian Brothers Academy girls in last Thursday’s match against Bishop Grimes and dazzled again as the Brothers prevailed 7-0 over the Cobras.
Opening with a 265, Occhino maintained the torrid pace with 230 and 244 as she finished with a 739 series. Sophia Cierek contributed a 429 series as Emily Sanefski led Grimes with a 354 set.
A closer boys match went 5-2 in CBA’s favor even though Grimes’ pinfall of 2,842 topped the Brothers’ 2,662. Tom Dearnaley led CBA with a 651 series that included games of 232 and 225, while Jake Mason had a 225 game in his 566 set.
Grimes countered with Alec Kinne’s closing game of 245 during a 561 series. Victor Rizzo had a 553 series with a 188 high game as Zach Leto had a 522 series and Casey Mierek a 494 series and 194 high game.
A day later Grimes dropped a close 4-3 boys match to Weedsport at Rainbow Lanes where Rizzo shot a pair of 240 games during a 651 series and Leto closed with a 204 during his 577 series. The girls Cobras lost a 5-2 decision.
