WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Hundreds of kids got the chance to learn how to ice skate ahead of the 2025 Prevagen U.S. Figure Skating Competition this weekend. Visit Wichita and the Boys and Girls Club hosted Skatefest it at the Wichita Ice Center. The event consisted of a 30 minute lesson and 30 minutes to skate. Kids also got to meet 2014 Olympic Gold Medalist Gracie Gold who was on hand for the event. Gold says it meant a lot to be there for the kids. And so to be back in the Midwest and see all these kids and their rental skates, a lot of them out there for the first time, I started it on a public session," said Gold. Over 300 kids took part in the event. "To be back here and see kids who absolutely look just like me when I started is really, really fun, really brings the whole story full circle and again in two weekends is the U.S. Championships, which was always my favorite event of the whole competition season. And yeah, it's a lot of Wichita, a lot of Midwest and a lot of skating. So really looking forward to this," she said. The competiton takes place from Jan. 20-26 at Intrust Bank Arena.
