HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - An event was held Sunday to remember the life of Codi Bigsby and celebrate the success of the CODI Alert.
It was held at the Virginia Black Dream Caucus by BLM757 on what would've been Codi’s seventh birthday. It included a coat drive for the unhoused and more details about the success of the CODI Alert program.
The program is designed to efficiently inform the public of when a child is missing, and their disappearance poses a credible threat. It is named after Codi, who was reported missing from his Hampton home in 2022.
"It was something that brought the community together in a way that I haven't really seen before,” said JaPharii Jones, BLM757 President.
Jones said they helped search for Codi after hearing the news of his disappearance. However, he said they were told early on an Amber Alert couldn’t be issued because there were no clear signs of an abduction.
He said they worked to formulate and help push the Codi Alert bill to make a difference in cases like Codi's and it ended up passing last year.
"They came together and said 'hey, this makes sense. Let's make this happen because there's no reason that any missing child should go missing and they don't have an alert,'” Jones said.
Codi's father Cory was later found guilty of his murder and disappearance.
Since the program went into effect in September, Virginia State Police confirmed they’ve put out 14 alerts.
Jones said the plan is to try to expand the CODI alert.
“Our goal is to make it a national law, and with that, we're going to need a little bit of help," Jones said.
