BROWN COUNTY, Ind. — Brown County Schools will resume in-person instruction on Monday. According to a Facebook post from the school district, Brown County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay schedule Monday. The district's return to in-person instruction comes after a five-day stretch of e-learning and snow days. Previous reporting indicates Brown County Schools did not hold in-person classes because some students in their district live on gravel roads that are difficult to clear snow from. Brown County Schools had their first snow day of the new semester last Monday, opting to keep students at home while crews cleared precipitation produced by a winter storm off local roads. Before the crews could get all of Brown County's gravel roads cleaned off, another winter weather system rolled through the area, depositing more snow onto county streets and back roads. Even though Brown County Schools are starting to hold in-person classes again, not all local roads are cleared. Per the district, the two-hour delay schedule planned for Monday will allow bus drivers to run their routes with a greater amount of daylight available to illuminate snowy roads. Browns County Schools also indicated that its bus drivers will be contacting some families that live along gravel roads in an effort to work out alternate pickup routes. The district also encouraged families that think they can't get their kids to school safely to contact administrators. If a student can't make it to class because they live on a sparsely plowed or impassable gravel road, their absences will be logged as excused by Brown County Schools. "Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we work to return to school while continuing to prioritize the safety of our entire school community," district administrators wrote in a Facebook post. "Stay safe, and we appreciate your support." Brown County Schools are encouraging families living on gravel roads that do not receive information on alternate bus routes contact the district's transportation department at (812) 988-5412.
