Arctic outbreak likely on the way
Jan 12, 2025
(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — We all know that winter can be cold. In particular, January and February seem to be some of the coldest months around these parts. However, there are growing concerns that some of the coldest temperatures we've seen in quite some time may move in soon.
The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) monitors trends and patterns and has started highlighting a significant portion of the United States for a potential arctic outbreak.
Here's what we know:
Timing: roughly Saturday through Tuesday next week
Highs may be in the negatives or, at the most, single digits
Confidence is minimal due to model disagreement
Another aspect to consider is just how far out this event is. Considering the blast of arctic air is still a week away, as of Sunday, a lot may change and likely will change.
By Saturday early morning, a particularly strong and pronounced arctic front is expected to dive into the Central Plains. You can see the contrast well on these temperature maps that are plotted thousands of feet up in the atmosphere.
Around midday on Saturday the front will likely surge through much of Colorado. This will drop temperatures rapidly and make for a very cold start to the week. However, this first blast of arctic air may not be the most severe.
Models are indicating that an even more potent air mass will invade the region on Monday. The light red colors on the map here indicate the color table essentially maxing out, meaning the values won't go much colder. Some of the coldest air that Southern Colorado has ever seen will likely arrive around this time.
The bitterly cold arctic airmass is forecast to stick around for at least a few days. By Tuesday and Wednesday, the region will slowly start to recover but the temperatures will still be icy cold.
