ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WROC) — The Bills won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. The Broncos came out firing.
Denver immediately got into a third and 8, but Bo Nix connected with Courtland Sutton for 19 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Nix went deep to Troy Franklin for a 43-yard TD and the Broncos had a quick seven point lead.
Josh Allen opened the Bills first drive with a 15-yard connection to Khalil Shakir. James Cook got loose around the outside for 16 on the next play. A fourth and one QB sneak from Allen got the Bills to first down at the 11, but Allen missed on a pair of passes to force a field goal try. Tyler Bass was good from 26 yards and the Denver lead was down to 7-3.
The Bills forced a three and out on the next possession after Matt Milano chased a scrambling Nix out of bounds for a zero yard sack on third and 6. A Ty Johnson 11 yard run got the Bills moving. Allen had to get Buffalo out of 2nd and 12 with a pair of runs for 16 yards. He then converted a third and 5 with a seven yard throw to Curtis Samuel that closed the first quarter. Allen grabbed another first down with his legs on third and 3 to set up a first and goal at the five. Cook scored on the next play to give the Bills their first lead of the game at 10-7.
Denver's next possession appeared to stall at their own 43, but punter Riley Dixon completed a 15 yard pass to Marvin Mims on a fake punt to keep the drive alive. The drive didn't last much longer. Terrel Bernard made a stop for a loss of three on a receiver screen and a blitz got Von Miller in free to force a throwaway. Sean Payton elected to punt from the Bills 39 on 4th and 7. That punt was downed at the Buffalo one yard line.
Buffalo picked up three first downs, but a Zach Allen sack forced Buffalo into 3rd and 21. A short throw to Shakir was well short, forcing the Bills to punt at the two minute warning of the first half. Mack Hollins buried Mims the moment he caught the punt and Mims took a personal foul after the play that backed Denver up to their own eight yard line.
Nix had runs for two and 12 yards that moved the ball out past the 30 yard line. Passes to Sutton went for 11 and 21 yards to give the Broncos a field goal try before the half. However, the Wil Lutz 50 yard field goal try hit the right upright and stayed out. Bills went to the half up 10-7.
Two more Cook runs got the motor started for the Bills in the second half. That was followed by a 25 yard throw to Dawson Knox. Cook picked up 19 more to move the ball inside the ten yard line. However, the next two runs netted only three yards and Allen took a sack on third down after sitting in the pocket a long while. Another short Bass field goal doubled the Bills lead to 13-7.
Denver went three and out on their first second half possession after two short runs and a piece of good coverage on third down. The next Buffalo drive got momentum from an illegal hit against Ray Davis on a throw that was a bit too long. Davis went to the locker room with a head injury.
The Bills ended up facing a fourth and a little more than one yard at the Denver 24. Allen hung in the pocket for a few seconds before uncorking a throw to the back of the end zone that Johnson corralled for a 24 yard scoring catch. The play was reviewed, but Johnson appeared to just barely hang on. Allen hit Keon Coleman for the two point conversion and the Bills were firmly in control at 21-7.
Another three and out that nearly was a Damar Hamlin interception got Buffalo the ball back at their own 41 after a 23 yard Khalil Shakir punt return. Three plays later, Allen opened the 4th quarter with a third and 6 completion to Curtis Samuel that went for a 55 yard touchdown. Samuel did a good chunk of the work, breaking a couple tackles to find the end zone. Suddenly, the game was a rout at 28-7.
The Broncos opened their next drive with four consecutive first downs. However, a Christian Benford tackle for a loss put Denver behind the sticks. Cam Lewis pushed Jaleel McLaughin out of bounds for no gain on a 4th and three play and the Broncos were held off the scoreboard again.
Buffalo wasn't done. Allen lofted a beautiful throw to Dalton Kincaid on third and down that went for 35 yards. The catch might not have counted if there was a replay, but the Broncos didn't challenge and the Bills got the next snap off quickly. The drive ended in a field goal that gave the Bills a 31-7 lead and sent everyone off to their cars.
