Govs drop OT thriller to SF Washington, Girls lose on the road
Jan 12, 2025
Both the Govs boys and girls faced off with Sioux Falls Washington on Saturday, the boys home in Pierre and the girls on the road. The boys game was a constant back and forth, neither team really ever pulling away with the ball game. You could look at the box score and see that after the first quarter finished 14-14, first half closing at 28-26, and overtime being required to settle it. Luke Olson led Pierre in scoring with 25, including two late steals that led to points. The Govs looked like they might pull out the win leading 68-65 in the final seconds, but a Benjamin Sprecher three at the buzzer would send it to extra time and give the Warriors the momentum they needed to get the 77-73 win, winning the OT period 9-5. A bright spot from this loss for Pierre was their improvement from the first half in which they scored 26 points to the second half where they scored 42. The Warriors improve to 5-2, the Govs fall to 2-4.
A few hours east, the Govs girls took on the Warriors at their place in a sort of measuring stick game for Pierre. The Warriors are one of the premier girls programs in the state and this was an opportunity for the Govs to see where they stack up. The game got started with a furious pace and a few quick buckets from Lennix DuPris who had 14 in the first half alone. Pierre also got a few threes from Emery Larson who had 9 in the first half as the Govs trailed 35-32 at the break. The Warriors were able to pull away with it on the back of a 24-point performance from Dana Harpe, but Kirk Beebout was pleased with his teams performance against such a high-caliber opponent.
The upcoming schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Govs as three of their next four games are against 5-1 Brandon Valley, 4-1 Aberdeen and 6-0 O’Gorman. Beebout, however, is optimistic about the prospect of his team playing such talented opponents early in the season, saying “it will be great for us to see where we are as a team against them.”
