INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Fire Department extinguished a fire at Capital City Fence Company Sunday morning. According to a press release from IFD, dispatchers received numerous calls about a fire in the 900 block of East Ohio Street around 9:58 a.m. IFD subsequently managed to get units to the scene by 10:01 a.m. When crews made it to the area, they found a 3,000-square-foot corrugated steel structure that had heavy smoke coming out of it. Crews attempted to access the structure at 10:10 a.m. Firefighters were met by high heat when they approached the building, but they could not locate the source of the blaze. At 10:17 a.m., crews found heavy fire in the building's cockloft. Officials then ordered firefighters to employ defensive tactics only. The roof of the building collapsed at 10:57 a.m. IFD got the fire under control at 12:05 p.m. — two hours and eight minutes after first responders arrived at the scene. In total, 80 firefighters responded to the scene to help extinguish the blaze. IFD has confirmed that no firefighters or civilians were injured by the fire. Per IFD, the property the fire broke out at has been owned by the same person since 1995. One of the buildings on the property was constructed by August Busch of Anheuser Busch Brewing in 1919. Capitol City Fence Company now uses the building Busch constructed as an office space. IFD did its best to ensure the original building was not damaged during the fire. Water used to extinguish the fire left some walls and ceilings in the original building in disrepair. A breezeway that connects the corrugated steel shop to the original building also sustained some fire damage, but IFD prevented the flames from spreading into the historic structure.
