Above freezing for the first time in 9 days
It is the little victories when it comes to our weather in central Indiana. Sunday marked an important victory as the chilly stretch of subfreezing temperatures finally ended. Marking the longest stretch in about a year, Indianapolis was officially below freezing for 222 hours (9 days 6 hours). The stretch ended at 10:20 a.m. Sunday when the thermometer at the Indianapolis International Airport hit 32°. This was the longest stretch below freezing since January 13-21, 2024. Indy had a high Sunday of 36°. This is right on normal for this time of the year.

Janaury 12 Observed High Temperatures
There have been other stretches of consecutive hours below freezing in recent years. This stretch and the stretch last January are the second-highest in the last decade. In February 2021 and December 2017 into January 2018, each had two weeks with temperatures below freezing. The longest stretch with consecutive days below freezing for Indianapolis took place in December 1976 into February 1977 with 36 days below freezing.

Cold front to drop temps for Monday
The near-normal temperatures will soon be a thing of the past thanks to this clipper system. It gave us a warm front earlier with a cold front following in its footsteps. This front will swing through here Sunday night and gradually drop temperatures for Monday. Our forecast highs in central Indiana will likely be earlier in the day in the 20s. We'll quickly get back into the teens later in the day without accounting for the wind chill.

Monday Bus Stop Forecast
Frigid temps return with a brief burst of snow
By Monday night into Tuesday morning, the subzero lows and even colder wind chills return to central Indiana. It may be the first time many hometowns see double-digit lows! We'll watch to see if the National Weather Service will issue a Cold Weather Advisory because these forecast temps will be very in line with when those get issued. Check out the Futurecast Wind Chills for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Wednesday 7:00 AM Futurecast Wind Chills
Amid the very cold air (highs 15-20° below normal in the teens) both Tuesday and Wednesday, a quick round of accumulating snow is likely on Tuesday. A quick-hitting system for the daytime Tuesday will provide light showers and accumulations upwards of an inch possibly. The timing for this looks to be late morning through the afternoon. Could cause some slick spots on the roads but the overall impact looks low.

Southerly flow returns; warms us back up again
Wednesday will be the "transition" day from the chilly northwest flow as the warmer southerly flow returns. We'll begin to feel its effects Thursday with highs surpassing freezing once again. The warming doesn't stop there because we're talking about highs approaching 40° by Friday.
Temperature Departures From Normal Tuesday
Temperature Departures From Normal Friday
Conditions will be quiet Wednesday through much of Friday. Then our next weathermaker comes into view in time for next weekend. This system will bring rain and snow to portions of the Ohio Valley. Indiana is included here. Because our region will likely still be above freezing, the precipitation onset Friday will be rain. One thing we'll be watching is just how close the freezing line 32° gets to our region. That freezing line will determine who sees more rain and who sees more snow.
By Saturday, I think back-end moisture following the passage of a cold front could give us additional snow showers mixing in. At this point, still too early to talk specifics but the timeframe of late Friday through Saturday we are watching!
Turning colder again about a week from now
By next weekend and into the following week, temperatures look to remain below average. By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day/Inauguration Day January 20, we could be looking at another colder blast in the works. Lots of fluctuations in the days ahead so keep an eye on the forecast!
