How to keep your pets protected in the winter

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Frigid temperatures are expected to return later in the week, and while it's uncomfortable for people, it's also uncomfortable for your pets.
Just like people, pets get cold too. The rule of thumb is that they should never be left outside for too long. Exposure to winter elements can cause chapped paws, and itchy, flaking skin, but there are several other long-term risks to cold weather.

Winter walks can become dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents and salts are licked off bare paws. To help these dangers from affecting your pet's health, remember to never keep your pets outdoors for long periods in very cold weather.
Under Massachusetts law, it is illegal to keep your dog tethered outside for longer than 15 minutes during a weather advisory, warning, or watch. Owners who violate these laws can be fined anywhere between $50 for first offenses to $300 for subsequent violations.
Consider getting your pet a coat or sweater, and limit walks to 15 minutes. You must also care for your pet's feet to rid them of any salt and ice. Gently rub the bottom of your pet's paws with a damp towel, or buy dog boots to prevent irritation.
Like people, cats and dogs can get frostbite and hypothermia. Remember, if it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pets.
