CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A 16-year-old boy named Cody Johnson passed away in December after battling leukemia, but his parents created a college scholarship fund in his honor.  Cody was in Clovis High's marching band, winter percussion and concert band.  "Cody was an extraordinary music student here at Clovis High," Esmeralda Rocha Lozano, Director of the Instrumental Music Program Band, Orchestra, Percussion & Dance Color Guard at Clovis High School said.  Music played a big role in his final days at the Valley Children's Hospital. "He would roll in and they would say, 'Cody, what's what are you going to sing for us today?' And oftentimes they would sing with him," Dara Johnson said.  Cody's parents Dara and Matthew Johnson decided to raise money for a college scholarship fund in honor of Cody.  "What we can do is share a memorial endowment scholarship fund with two kids that had the same passion that Cody did," Matthew Johnson said.  Choosing one student from Clovis High and another from Hoover High School. "He first fell in love with marching band, watching our Hoover marching band," Mrs. Johnson said.  Keeping his memory alive. "We'll be able to hopefully share with the recipients who Cody was, what his passions were and what made him really, really special to us," Mr. Johnson said. Lozano said Cody left his mark on the program. "Cody continues to live through all of us and his legacy that he has left here and has reminded us the importance of community and family and friends and the gift that music brings and how we need each other to heal," Lozano said.  The fund has already raised over $28,000 as of Saturday. "His favorite quote was, 'If you're going to fall down, make sure you fall on your back. Because if you can see up, you can get up.' And I just feel like he was teaching us, preparing us," Mrs. Johnson said.  There will be a memorial held on February 16 at the Clovis Veterans Building.
