Open Thread: The Coyote’s popularity cannot be denied

A new study shows the Spurs mascot’s social media account is one of the most followed in America A recent post by Legal Sports Report revealed the biggest sports mascots on Instagram.
The online gambling site examined the Instagram follower counts of team mascots across the four big American sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL). Chicago’s Benny the Bull claims the top spot as the most-followed sports mascot, with 513,000 Instagram fans. Since 1969, the Bull’s mascot is known for his impressive stunts, like dunking tricks and aerobatic flips.
Our beloved Coyote came in second for NBA mascot with 117,800 Instagram followers. That following was good enough to elevate The Coyote to eighth overall.
Adam Candee, Managing Editor of LSR, commented on the findings:
“The mascots who represent America’s major sports teams have their own important role as stand-out characters that fans can rally behind to support their team and see in person at their games. It is understandable that many of them would have gained a significant online following, especially on Instagram where they often post clips of their antics during games.
The most successful mascots also utilize their role in the community to share positive messages and have more personal interactions with the fans.
San Antonio’s favorite varmint makes scores of appearances yearly promoting community, cheering on schools, celebrating achievements, spreading goodwill, and handing out much needed items.
