Waiehu Golf Course briefly closed after MPD discovered an unexploded ordnance

MAUI, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Maui Police Department officers were called to Waiehu Golf Course on the afternoon of Jan. 11 to respond to an unexploded ordnance that was found on the course.

The area was blocked off as a safety precaution until the Hawaii Inter-Island Bomb Squad made it to the scene.

Once the HIBS arrived, they identified the ordnance as a grenade with an open bottom and hollow inside. While the grenade spoon and safety pin were intact, the front of the spoon was not connected to the fuse body, the striker pin was missing and no explosives were within the device.
Officials recovered the item and submitted it for safekeeping.
The golf course was then allowed to reopen and nobody was injured.

The Maui Police Department asks members of the public to avoid handling potentially dangerous devices, such as ordnances, directly and to contact the department for assistance if they find an unexploded ordnance.
