CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A Hollywood-style film studio under construction in South Bay could put San Diego back on the map for those in the entertainment industry.
Filmmaker and San Diego native Aaron David Roberts is leading the charge to bring an $85 million film studio to Chula Vista.
Construction on the Chula Vista Entertainment Complex is underway in San Diego's South Bay.
Roberts, the founder and CEO of the Chula Vista Entertainment Complex, was live on KUSI to talk more about the project, which he says will be implemented in two parts.

The 89,000 square-foot Hollywood-style studio will be a state-of-the-art virtual production facility aimed to keep entertainment jobs in San Diego and bring an economic boost to the region.
Roberts said the project is split into two phases.
Phase one focuses on a creative hub in the Millenia Library building in Chula Vista that is currently under construction. The top two floors of the building will be home to a creative co-work space with podcast studios, photo studios, and a small LED wall that San Diego creatives can utilize.
Phase two will focus on the lot across from the soon-to-be Millenia Library being built at 1775 Millenia Avenue in Chula Vista, and will be home to the state-of-the-art virtual production studio that will have three stages.

Roberts noted he hopes this project attracts large-scale film and TV production back to San Diego. “We’re really confident that this project is going to really get San Diego working in media again."
The project first began taking form when Roberts met with Chula Vista Mayor John McCann in the summer of 2023. Since then, he said they have been working behind the scenes with the city until City Council in December unanimously approved the project to move forward.

Roberts comes from a background in filmmaking as his father ran a production company in San Diego while he was growing up. IMDb lists some of Roberts' credits as a producer for TV shows "Chartered" and "The Cast Members" and films "The Last Deal" and "Three Weddings."
Both creative spaces will be available for those in the entertainment industry to rent out.
Roberts estimates the film studio will bring around $545 million in economic impact to the region.
