Jacks pull away from Roos

BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) -- A third-quarter surge lifted the South Dakota State basketball team to a 78-61 victory over Kansas City Saturday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena.
Up just four points at halftime, 34-30, SDSU shot 80 percent and outscored KC 25-12 in the third quarter to pull away. The Jackrabbits improve to 14-3 on the season and 4-0 in the Summit League while the Roos fall to 5-13 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Jackrabbits put together a well-rounded scoring night as five players finished in double figures. Paige Meyer tallied 15 points and eight assists, both team highs, to lead the way. Katie Vasecka and Haleigh Timmer scored 13 apiece, followed by Brooklyn Meyer with 12 and Madison Mathiowetz with 10 points.
Led by three triples apiece from Paige Meyer and Timmer, SDSU drained a season-high 12 3-pointers on the afternoon. The Jacks also got treys from Vasecka, Mathiowetz, Madysen Vlastuin and Hilary Behrens.
The Jackrabbits started the game 5-of-5 from the field with buckets from Paige Meyer, Mathiowetz, Timmer and Vasecka to lead 18-3 and force KC timeout. Out of the huddle, KC worked all the way back to tie the game at 27-all and trailed 34-30 going into the locker room. Following the perfect shooting start, South Dakota State finished the first half making just six of its next 21 attempts from the floor.
SDSU maintained its lead over the first four minutes of the second half, then ended the third quarter on a 15-3 run. Timmer knocked down two 3-pointers in the stretch, which ended with the Jacks ahead 59-42. Mesa Byom scored the first seven Jackrabbit points of the final period, putting SDSU ahead by 22 at 64-42. SDSU's largest lead of the game - 70-46 - came off a Timmer breakaway layup at the 7:11 mark.
Mathiowetz, Brooklyn Meyer and Vasecka corralled four rebounds each, but KC posted a 34-24 edge over SDSU on the glass. SDSU had 21 assists on 26 made field goals. After Paige Meyer's season-high eight helpers, Vasecka dished four assists while Emilee Fox, Brooklyn Meyer and Kallie Theisen posted two each.
The Jackrabbits shot 54 percent in the contest, the third straight game above 50 percent and the seventh time this season. The Roos were 44 percent from the floor. Alayna Contreras led all scorers with 21 points for Kansas City.

SDSU is 20-1 against Kansas City all-time.
The Jackrabbits' .542 shooting performance is their second best of the season.
SDSU's 24 rebounds in the game is a season low.
