VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — Three program single game records, one that has stood since January 18, 2003 and another since January 10, 1991, fell on Saturday as Grace Larkins poured in 45 points in a 71-66 South Dakota victory over Omaha inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.Just two days after tying her career-high with 34 points, Larkins poured in 45 points, the most in a single game in USD history. The previous record was 40 points by Mandy Koupal against Augustana on January 18, 2003.
"It's not possible without my teammates," Grace Larkins said following the win. "We have great shooters out there and (Omaha) had to guard them, so that allows the ball screen to be a bit more open."Larkins scored her 45 points on 19 made shots, which is also a program record. The previous record of 18 was done by Amy Heller against Mount Marty on January 10, 1991. Larkins also reset her single game attempts record with 32. She had 31 against LMU earlier this season.
"Grace did an incredible job, but the rest of our team did a great job of saying, 'hey, this is working and we're going to trust it and we're going to keep doing what we're doing until it doesn't work, then we will try something different,'" head coach Carrie Eighmey said. "That says a lot about the team that we have, we have a bunch of unselfish kids on our team. Grace is probably one of the most unselfish kids I've ever coached. We asked her to keep attacking and that's what she did."Omaha jumped ahead early 15-12 and expanded their lead to seven points at the half as Larkins and the Coyotes struggled to build any momentum. Larkins had 16 first-half points, but also had to sit the final two minutes with two fouls. What was a six-point Coyote advantage with 4:10 to play became a seven-point Maverick lead at the half on a 13-0 run to close out the first 20 minutes. The second half became Grace Larkins time for the Coyotes. She scored 14 points in the third quarter and added another 15 in the fourth. In the final quarter of play, Larkins went 6-for-7 from the floor and added three points at the free throw line.Cassidy Carson also helped spear a comeback for the Coyotes as she had six points in the third quarter, including a three-pointer that cut the lead to three midway through the quarter. Carson is the lone Coyote outside of Larkins to score in double figures Saturday, totaling 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. As a team, the Coyotes shot 55% in the second half to mount a comeback and pick up the win. Meanwhile, the Coyote defense stepped up and held Omaha to 42% from the field in the second half and 41% overall.Larkins scored the final nine points over the last four minutes to help seal the Coyote victory. Outside of scoring, Larkins finished one rebound shy of her career best, snatching 13 for her fourth straight double-double and sixth in her last seven games. In the career record books, Larkins passed assistant coach Amber (Hegge) Cunningham for fifth all-time in points. Larkins now has 1,791 points, just two behind Ciara (Duffy) Eastmo for fourth on the all-time list. Larkins is now fifth in assists as a Coyote as well at 449, passing Alexis Yackley. The Coyotes are now 3-1 to start Summit League play and have won four straight inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
