BUFFALO N.Y. (WIVB) -- The NFL playoffs are underway and for many fans that means more than just cheering on their favorite teams. It also means placing bets. It's no secret that sports betting is more accessible than ever before. It has become legal in many states over the years -- including New York -- and mobile applications such as FanDuel and DraftKings have made it easy to place a wager without even having to leave your house. Joe Maloney, senior vice president of strategic communications at the American Gaming Association, noted three of the biggest betting moments on the calendar: The men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments, the first week of the NFL season, and the entire NFL postseason leading up to the Super Bowl. "The NFL really owns the betting calendar when it comes to big moments," said Maloney. "It's just a reflection of increased confidence in legal sports wagering in this country and the popularity of the NFL, of football, and the excitement of the playoffs." According to Maloney, sports betting revenue from New York State last year was $2 billion. So, where does all that money go? "Legal sports wagering is supporting communities and providing services through tax revenue," said Maloney. "It provides anything from problem gambling services to helping stopgap budget holes throughout the state of New York where it's important." A big chunk of the change also goes toward funding education. Maloney said there is always an uptick in sports betting when the playoffs come around. But there is specifically an increase in casual betters, who are people who will place smaller bets for entertainment purposes. "It reflects that excitement, that energy, that enthusiasm particularly in a market such as Buffalo," said Maloney. "Buffalo has a really exciting team, a great set of players, and a really fun matchup on Sunday." Angela DiRosa, program manager with the NYS Problem Gambling Resource Center, said the center often sees more people calling for help when football season is over and that there are warning signs to monitor. "If you're finding that you're experiencing the need to bet more and more money, or more events," said DiRosa. "Or you find yourself placing more bets because you've lost money and you're trying to win it back." DiRosa emphasized that if you or someone you know might be struggling with a gambling addiction, help is always available. At any time you can call 1-877-8-HOPENY for assistance. You can also reach out to the Western Problem Gambling Resource Center directly at 817-833-4274 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Latest Local News NFL postseason gives sports betting a boost Local shops make sure Bills fans are fed for playoffs WIVB News 4’s Bills Legends interviews WNY native Noelani Cornfield rejoins with community playing basketball for UB Canisius tastes victory after winless months under new coach Jim Christian Trina Catterson joined the News 4 team in 2024.
