BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A somber, yet moving service was held Saturday at Big Zion AME Church. Family, friends and community members gathered to honor Reggie Hunter. He was one of the 14 victims lost in the recent terrorist attack in New Orleans.
The church was filled with emotion. Attendees reflected on Hunter, a source of light and joy.
“Reggie meant the world to us. Family is everything, and he was a very important aspect of our family — an anchor if you will,” said Shirell Robinson Jackson, one of Hunter’s relatives.
Hunter's death, and the loss of the other victims, have deeply affected his family and the Baton Rouge community. Yet, amid the grief, the gathering was a time to mourn. It also showed the strength and unity that emerges in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
“This has been one of the most devastating things we’ve had to go through as a family,” Jackson said. “It hurts so bad, but at the same time, it brought us together.”

The service was marked by heartfelt tributes and moments of lighthearted reflection. One mourner fondly recalled Hunter’s love for taking selfies and how much joy he brought to those around him.
“I love you, Reggie, and I’m going to miss you,” the man said, sparking warm laughter among the congregation. “One of my favorite things to do was to go on Facebook and watch my boy do his thing.”
As pallbearers carried Hunter’s casket from the church, his legacy loomed large, particularly the love and guidance he provided to his two young sons.
“His oldest son is eleven; he’ll be twelve this month,” Jackson said. “That’s a difficult age, and the relationship I know him and his father had…this is going to be so much on him. We’re going to be there as a family to love and support him, constantly reminding him who his dad was and how much he loved him.”
Hunter's family vows to remember him as a loving father, friend, and son. In their deep grief, they seek the community's prayers and support.
A GoFundMe campaign will soon launch to cover education costs for Hunter's eldest son.
