RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Red Onion State Prison inmate who escaped from a hospital spoke exclusively with 8News after pleading guilty to the charge of escaping a correctional facility in August 2023. On Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) said 22-year-old Naseem Roulack, of Woodbridge, Va., -- who was 21 years old at the time -- escaped the supervision of two VADOC security officers at around 5:50 a.m. By that evening, Virginia State Police obtained an arrest warrant for Roulack on one felony count of escape for a person already in police custody. The search prompted efforts both on the ground and in the air. Roulack was already serving a 13-year sentence in Greensville County at the Greensville Correctional Center for charges of aggravated malicious wounding, grand larceny and hit and run. 8News asked Roulack why he escaped. “They was doing all kind of crazy s— like sticking all kinds of tubes in me, plucking me and putting tubes in me I was just like yeah, like I ain't about to keep doing this s— and they wouldn’t stop," Roulack said. "Once I realized I’m not in a secure place, then I thought like are these people crazy? They don’t know who the f--- I am type s---? Once I realized, I was like yeah, it’s over with.” While authorities were on the search for Roulack, he said he did not feel worried. “I was going to clubs, outside—I didn’t have no mask on or hide in somebody’s house. Cause when I was free—when I escaped I felt like I freed myself. You feel me? I didn’t feel like no fugitive,” Roulack said. 8News then learned a Richmond resident said they found a gown in their home, broken glass and a basement door left ajar the same day of Roulack’s escape. Police would not confirm to 8News at the time whether or not Roulack was a suspect in the case, but the homeowner said officers on scene told him it was Roulack’s gown. When asked about the alleged break-in, Roulack said he could not comment on charges related to Richmond as he has pending charges. According to court records, those 10 charges include breaking and entering with the intent to commit larceny, breaking and entering an occupied house to commit a misdemeanor, credit card theft and more. Days after Roulack's escape, a reward for information leading to his capture was set at $5,000. An additional reward of $10,000 was offered by the Montgomery County Department of Police in Maryland after authorities identified Roulack as a suspect in a Sept. 1, 2023, armed carjacking incident in the state. Another $10,000 was offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for information leading to Roulack one day after the Montgomery County Department of Police's announcement of their offered reward. Online court records show Roulack faces multiple charges in Montgomery County, Maryland as well, but Roulack told 8News he also cannot comment on those charges. However, Roulack did tell 8News he saw the multiple rewards that were being offered for information into his whereabouts. He decided to feature on a music video titled, "Escaped." “See, I put the music out to prove a point," Roulack said. “When I used to see little press interviews and s— like that, man I felt like they [were] lying. I’m laying down on the couch eating some chips they don’t know what the f--- I’m doing.” Roulack explained to 8News since childhood he had issues with obeying authority. “Y’all could look at my records from elementary school I used to fight teachers and do all types of crazy stuff," Roulack said. “My whole life I’ve been like this, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” Roulack said he was raised by a mother who is African and had strict rules, adding that life was also difficult. “My mother always made sure we had a roof to sleep under. Even if the lights or water don’t work, we would have food in our stomachs, and she would go hungry,” Roulack said. An already stressful life at home only made Roulack grow to be unhappy and want more material things in life. Roulack explained he wanted his life to emulate the ones of rappers Lil' Wayne and 50 Cent. He admitted to lying to Child Protective Services landing him in foster care. “It’s like my life took a turn drastically like I started to be exposed to s— I’ve never seen in my life. I had more freedom almost to do more bad s---,” Roulack said. When 8News asked Roulack if he wanted to turn his life around, he exclaimed saying, "Yeah!," adding that he wants more out of life. “I’m about to apply for Adam State University so I can get my associates. I’m just doing stuff now, fundamental things in life,” Roulack said. 8News also asked Roulack if he regretted anything in his life. "No, not at all. I don’t regret nothing in my life cause I did it for a reason," Roulack said. "Even if it was negative, positive, I did it for a reason.” U.S. Marshals Service and Fairfax County police captured Roulack on Oct. 25, 2023 in Fairfax County and they said he tried to escape by jumping from a third-floor window with a rifle in hand. Roulack was later captured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to court records, Roulack was set to face a jury trial in early December for the escape at the hospital but he pled guilty in late November and was sentenced to five years in prison with two years suspended. According to VADOC inmate records, Roulack is scheduled to be released in June of 2034 but he told 8News he has a good-time release date of December 2032 which is subject to good behavior and participation in various programs.
